What is an electrical vehicle (EV)
An EV or electric vehicle is the umbrella term for any vehicle that is powered, either in part or fully, by a battery that can be plugged into mains electricity. There are different types of electric vehicles on the market at present and these are as follows;
Pure-Electric Vehicle (Pure-EV) – this is a vehicle that is powered solely by a battery that is charged from mains electricity. Currently these cars have a range of around 100 miles but this is improving all the time.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – this is a vehicle that has a plug-in battery as well as an internal combustion engine (ICE). Your typical PHEV will have a pure electric range of around 10 miles and once the electric range has been utilised the vehicle will revert to the benefits of full hybrid capacity by utilising the battery power and ICE; there will be compromise of the range.
Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) – this is a vehicle that is powered by a battery but an ICE powered generator is on board. An E-REV is similar to a Pure EV but the battery range is much lower, at around 40 miles. This range is then extended by the onboard generator which provides many more miles. With an E-Rev car the vehicle is always electrically driven.
Hybrid Vehicle – this is a vehicle that is powered by either or both battery and ICE. The vehicle will select the power sauce automatically dependant on the speed, engine load and battery charge level. A hybrid vehicle does not have a battery that can be plugged in to be charged and it can be powered by a number of fuels.
